Ziggy Marley

Ziggy Marley was born as David Nesta Marley on October 17, 1968, in Kingston, Jamaica. The oldest son of reggae great Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley has continued the family’s involvement in the music scene, making a name for himself as one of the genre’s leading artists in the process. He spent some of his early years growing up in Trench Town, one of Kingston’s poorest neighborhoods as his father tried to make a success of his band, the Wailers (later Bob Marley and the Wailers). A singer in her own right, his mother joined the group in the mid-1970s. Also in his youth, Marley spent some time in Wilmington, Delaware, where his younger brother Stephen was born in 1972. He already had an older sister, Cedella, and an older half-sister, Sharon, from his mother’s previous relationship. The four siblings recorded their first song together, “Children Playing in the Streets,” in 1979. Written by their father, the single addressed the horrible poverty that many children in Jamaica were living in. Royalties from the song were donated to the United Nations Children’s Fund. Ziggy Marley made a name for himself as one of the genre’s leading artists. Ziggy and his siblings formed the band Melody Makers in 1981 after their father’s death. Their 1988 album, Conscious Party, won a Grammy and helped the group break through to mainstream audiences. After a few more successful albums with the band, Marley began a solo career in 2006.

Afroman's musical career began in the eighth grade, when he began recording homemade songs and selling them to his classmates. "The first tape I made was about my eighth-grade teacher," he once recalled. "She got me kicked out of school for sagging my pants, which was a big deal back then. So I wrote this song about her and it sold about 400 copies: it was selling to teachers, students, just about everybody. And I realized that, even though I wasn't at school, my song was at school, so in a way I was still there. All these people would come by my house just to give me comments about how cool they thought the song was." Foreman also performed in his church at a young age, playing both the drums and guitar.

The Mountain Goats

The Mountain Goats are, for all practical purposes, the endlessly clever and prolific John Darnielle and whomever he chooses to work with at the moment, which means the sound may change from project to project, but the overall tone and feel of his work remains remarkably consistent. Darnielle writes finely observed, impressionistic vignettes that blend a clear, realistic sense of detail with mildly surreal imaginings, giving his work a literary flavor that suits his status as a songwriter who is also a successful novelist. His early Mountain Goats releases were lo-fi, cassette-recorded efforts cut with a rotating cast of musicians, such as 1995's Nine Black Poppies and 2000's The Coroner's Gambit. By 2005's The Sunset Tree, his recordings had become cleaner and less cluttered, but his character studies were just as vivid. As the Mountain Goats cohered into a stable lineup (with Darnielle joined by Peter Hughes, Matt Douglas, and Jon Wurster), they recorded tuneful, thematically unified albums such as Beat the Champ (2015) and Jenny from Thebes (2023) that ranked with their finestwork.

Fear and Misery in the Third Reich

Fear and Misery in the Third Reich follows the lives of everyday citizens during Hitler’s rise to power. Through a series of interconnected playlets, this show dramatizes the erosion of ordinary life under Nazi rule and illustrates how a pervasive atmosphere of suspicion and anxiety can infiltrate households and fracture community bonds. Although this anti-Nazi play is over 90 years old, Bertolt Brecht’s warnings are more urgent than ever, as it serves as both a historical record of totalitarianism and a call for collective resistance against the normalization of violence and cruelty.

KAMALEHUA: THE SHELTERING TREE

KAMALEHUA: THE SHELTERING TREE tells the true story of Timoteo Haʻalilio, Royal Secretary and lifelong friend to King Kamehameha III. Set in the mid-nineteenth century, the opera reveals the little-known history of the Hawaiian Kingdom and its early struggles to maintain independence. The focus is Haʻalilio's 1842-45 mission to the United States, Great Britain, Belgium, and France to secure treaties recognizing Hawaiʻi as a sovereign nation with the goal of protecting the kingdom from annexation by foreigners. The opera illustrates the sophistication and establishment of the Hawaiian government at the time, as well as the vigilance of Hawaiian leaders in dealing with the pressures and politics of the western world. While the story focuses on the unique culture, politics, and history of Hawaiʻi, its themes are universal.

J.I.D

Destin Choice Route (born October 31, 1990), better known by the stage name J.I.D, is an American rapper from Zone 6, Atlanta, Georgia. He describes himself as “a soft-spoken but intricate lyricist with a cocky side.” His stage name originates from “jittery,” his grandmother’s nickname for him due to his sporadic behavior as a child. J.I.D began attending Hampton University on a football scholarship in the fall of 2008. At that time, he was nicknamed ‘Jidd’ and released music under multiple variations of that name. His first mixtape, CakeWalk, was released in May 2010 and featured a number of friends from Hampton. The tape also marked two of his earliest collaborations with EARTHGANG. He released his second mixtape, CakeWalk 2, in June 2011. J.I.D was expelled from Hampton at some point during his senior year. Route of Evil was released in June 2012 as J.I.D’s third mixtape. DJ Tay James, Justin Bieber’s official DJ, hosted each of these three mixtapes. J.I.D does not publicly acknowledge any of these tapes, and they are not easily discoverable on the internet. In October 2013, J.I.D released Para Tu, his fourth mixtape. Around this time, he also officially created the Spillage Village collective with EARTHGANG, Hollywood JB, and JordxnBryant. J.I.D re-released Para Tu on SoundCloud in December 2017 after fans had discovered it and were posting it online. In February 2014, J.I.D and the rest of Spillage Village released Bears Like This, their first compilation. In July of that year, J.I.D released Lucky Buddha, a collaborative EP with Money Makin' Nique. In January 2015, J.I.D released DiCaprio, an EP that ignited his rise to fame. Later that year, in July, Spillage Village released Bears Like This Too, their second compilation. In November 2015, J.I.D was an opening act on Omen’s Elephant Eyes Tour. In December 2016, Spillage Village released Bears Like This Too Much, their third compilation and the conclusion of the Bears Like This series. The album notably featured J. Cole and Bas. J.I.D signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville Records on February 20, 2017. Less than three weeks after his signing, he released his debut studio album, The Never Story, on March 10, 2017. On November 26, 2018, J.I.D released DiCaprio 2, his sophomore studio album, which is also a sequel to his 2015 EP. Also, in late November 2018, his stage name was adjusted to JID (without the periods) on streaming services in order to make it easier for users to find his music.
